Increasing Higher Ed
I’m not sure what I think about it. I’m glad I got the education I did, but it could have been better. Could have been better guided. Could have been different. I think “more college graduates” is too simplistic. One commenter says “trade schools are higher ed, business schools are higher ed,” and they have a point. Sometimes “life” is also higher ed. I think high school education could be better, include some skills training like they used to, make it possible for someone with a high school education to feel empowered and go out into the world as a free person … hm, American Dream anyone? Independence?
I don’t know. There’s too much anti-college, anti-liberal-arts stuff from America’s right-wing, who think it’s all just a scam to keep left-wing academics employed … on the other hand, the college market is too much of a market these days and increasing enrollment out of some vague middle-class cultural ideal of “everyone should go to college” is also misguided. I think colleges that benefit from increased enrollment should be required to provide better guidance / career counseling … or something.
