Future History? The Kids Born This Year
This is pretty interesting. In response to Beloit College’s 10th Annual Mindset List, which takes a stab at describing the worldview of the incoming Class of 2011 (grew up with bottled water; have always had the World Wide Web), Valleywag’s Nick Douglas presages The Mindset of the Class of 2029.
Some of my favorites: “They don’t know what a LOLCat is or why it talks that way,” “To relax, they’ve always turned on the nightly news. The news has always been delivered by comedians,” and “Computers have never been beige.” There’s more, of course.
If you want a dose of pessimism (or realism?), a commenter at Slashdot did his own version, heavily cribbing from Peak Oil, infotech futurism and other such things, including things like “Will eat organic food because there isn’t enough natural gas left for fertiliser and pesticides anyway” and “Will remember the internet as the predecessor of what became ‘transparent’ and they simply see it as ‘media.’” My favorite of his: “Will help tear up the broad asphalt streets to be replaced with narrow cobblestone.” We can only hope! Heh.
