Things we didn’t know this time last year
Each week, the [BBC News] Magazine chronicles interesting and sometimes downright unexpected facts from the news, through its strand 10 things we didn’t know last week. Here, to round off the year, are some of the best from the past 12 months.
That pretty much says it all. Some of my favorites:
20. Sex workers in Roman times charged the equivalent price of eight glasses of red wine.
38. A common American poplar has twice as many genes as a human being.
68. The egg came first.
You can also see their “100 things” for 2005 and 2004.
But back to 2006, I especially liked:
2. There are 200 million blogs which are no longer being updated, say technology analysts.
Why especially that one? Because this blog is going to seem like that a lot in 2007, and probably 2008 as well. Why? How’s this for a hint:
SPRING 2007
MAT 056: Intermediate Algebra and Trig. (6 hrs)
CHE 201: College Chemistry I (7 hrs)SUMMER
MAT 206: Foundations for Calculus (4 hrs)
CHE 202: College Chemistry II (7 hrs)FALL
MAT 209: Statistics (4 hrs)
CHE 230: Organic Chemistry I (7 hrs)Apply for Masters program
SPRING 2008
CHE 240: Organic Chemistry II (7 hrs)
BIO 230: Fundamentals of Microbiology (6 hrs)SUMMER
BIO 240: Genetics (6 hrs)FALL 2008: Enter Masters program
All those “(6 hrs)” and “(4 hrs)” mean one spends that many hours in class each week. For comparison, last year I did this:
SPRING 2006
HIS 125: Modern American History (3 hrs)
BIO 220: Biology II (6 hrs)
It may all be a bit too optimistic, and who knows what the next two years will really bring, but I think I can do it. See you around!
