Communication Anxiety
In a great post about how political bloggers tend to shy away from speaking about certain subjects, Kevin Drum writes, “They figure that saying nothing is better than the risk of getting crucified for saying something wrong.” Sadly there are enough pompous blowhards all too willing to speak up on subjects about which they know less than nothing…
But this resonated with me on another level. I usually feel the same way in my personal life. I couldn’t count the number of times I’ve wanted to say something to someone or express an emotion, but have held back for fear of saying something wrong, or just rocking the boat in general. I always regret it. But I never remember the regret when similar situations eventually crop op. Communicating with loved ones is kind of like trying to pick up a date. You see the hot person, but you’re afraid to go out on the shaky limb and risk anything. You see the potential gain from telling your loved one something they may not want to hear, but you’re afraid to go out on that shaky limb and mess up what you already have. But if you do too much of this, the “good thing” slowly becomes less and less good. Communication is hard, but worth it.
Considering, as Alex points out, it’s been 9 years, I should probably start some day.

So you’re saying you want to pick up some hot chick. You can tell me, I’m a big girl…
