Best Advice Ever

Buried in this post about LiveJournal angst & advice for emotional teenagers (and some non-teenagers who probably need it, too) is some of the best advice ever:

If you hate yourself or want to kill yourself, first ask yourself this: “Have I done everything in my power to change my shitty situation, or am I paralyzed by fear?” It’s always easier to complain/self-loathe/self-pity than to take action, even if you really want to change.

I’ve learned to have pretty much the same reaction when I start getting depressed or anxious about my life. “OK, but what can I do to change this?”

It’s kind of like depression, anxiety, and self-loathing are little demons that take hold in your head and feed off the attention you give them. If you see these mental complexes as parasitic, active enemies that are trying to undermine you, you can start to ignore them and overcome them.

No, that’s not a total answer, but it’s a small part of my personal solution. You should probably also add/consider the items at the bottom of this page about coping with anxiety/depression.
