Election

Alex has already done a great post about how good the new New York City Voter Guide is, so I’ll just point you to her.

The Gotham Gazette has a nice “Guide for the Last Minute Voter” which is very useful for gaining a reasonable working knowledge of what the various candidates and proposals are about.

Me, I’ll be voting for Ferrer for Mayor. After taking a look at his positions vs. those of incumbent Mayor Bloomberg, I like Ferrer’s better for the most part. Which isn’t surprising, since he’s a Democrat and I’m a Democrat. Sadly, he’s run a horrible race-based and practically non-existant campaign, and he’s going to lose. Ferrer seems to be a product of the bad side of the New York Democratic Party. There are definitely changes that need to be made for the NY Dems. But voting for Republicans is not the way to make those changes. Voting for Republicans will only put Republicans in power, and I do not agree with most Republican policies, so that is a nonviable option. Getting involved in the party and supporting reform-minded Democrats is the way to make changes in the Party.

If I were to not vote for Ferrer, I’d vote for Seth Blum of the Education Party. Not Bloomberg, the smoke-banning, protester-interring, free-speech-curbing, bicyclist-arreesting, stadium-obsessing, money-spending, “New York is a luxury product”-spouting fascist. And I’m not even a smoker.

That said, vote Yes on Question 1 to amend the state budget process, vote Yes on Question 2, the Transportation Bond Act, and Yes on Question 4 to add financial management requirements to the City Charter. But vote No on Question 3, the “ethics code” thing which seems to vaguely add additional powers to the Mayor’s office without sufficient need or explanation (in my opinion).
