Softly Stroking Your Spiritual Clitoris
In the interest of the constant struggle between maintaining a clean conscience and actually getting something done, I want to reproduce here one of the most brilliantly written comments I’ve ever read at DailyKos (on the topic of calling out freakishly insane far right people like “Cartoon Gaydar” Dobson and his Focus on the Sex — er, Family, sorry — organization as decidedly un-Christian):
I’ve had debates with people here who demur at calling them un-Christian. “Let’s leave the harsh language to them. We’re better than that.”
To me, that is utterly self-centered. It’s like lying back, lighting a vanilla candle and softly stroking your spiritual clitoris as America burns around you. That’s not Christianity either; it’s not just faith, it’s works, last I heard.
I’m pretty sure that’s the most clearly and colorfully written defense of strong tactics I’ve ever read. And I agree 100%. I’m not above even name-calling at this point. It’s not about stooping to the other side’s level, it’s about recognizing that we used to all be working together on the same side, but at some point a significant segment of the population has decided or been tricked into switching teams. They are now against all that America stands for, traitors to democracy, justice and rational thought, and they are dangerous. Mockery and name-calling helps to disarm people like that. Laugh at them and remove their teeth. Uncover their idiocy for all the moderate, sane people in the country to see, and you can bet they’ll be abandoned in disgust in no time.
It’s fighting time.
