If You Listen To NPR You Should Read This

We have the New York NPR station wake us up every morning. Alex listens to it more than I do; since she goes to work a half hour later than I, and I have to travel farther, I’m off in the shower and then off to work while she gets to lay there sleepily absorbing the radio for a while.

I’ve always been a little dismayed at the growing amount of corporate ads on NPR, and recently their running coverage of the different ways to “fix Social Security” has really irked me (what with it’s unspoken assumption that SS needs fixing in the first place, which it doesn’t).

I’m generally lazy and not disposed to go haranguing the station for these things. Instead I just use it as an excuse to not donate. But after reading this post at DailyKos by someone who says he used to work at NPR, I think I may change my mind on that. I knew NPR wasn’t really “public”, but I didn’t really know how the whole system worked. I wouldn’t have dreamed of calling up the local station during drive time and harranguing them with why I won’t donate — how idiotic! — but I didn’t really know what would be effective if I did want to complain. In any case, it’s an enlightening short read.
